Litchi Festival, Salt Rock

Litchi festival, salt rockIn Durban, litchis are a big part of the festivities as they come into season in early December. The litchi festival in Salt Rock is a great option for tourists and locals that want to experience a litchi orchard first hand.

However, you need to consider the weather in Ballito before travelling to the festival. The orchard is not ideal on a hot day, especially if you have a baby with you. The tractor ride can also be too bumpy for an infant. Here’s today’s weather forecast in Salt Rock:

That being said, it’s good to see that the organizers have made improvements over the years. They now have two tractors so getting in and out of the litchi orchard is faster. The trailer that is used now is far better than three years ago.

You’ll need to carry cash as there’s no swiping facilities, hopefully they’ll get this right in the future. Hot dogs & refreshments are sold at the orchard. If portable toilets make you squeamish then you might want to stop at the Tiffany Mall in Salt Rock before arriving at the Litchi Festival.

The parking area has moved to a field not far from the Flag Farm. If you hate dirt roads then the best route to take will be the N2 until you reach the Tinley Manor off ramp, turn left and follow the route until you see the Flag Farm sign and you’ll see the parking area for the Litchi Festival.

You might want to consider carrying the following:

  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Umbrella
  • Water or wet-wipes – To wash your hands
  • Camping Chairs – There’s no seating area in the orchard so this will be ideal for the elderly or if you have an infant with you.

Weather permitting, it’s a fun outing for the entire family.
