Whether you’re a tourist or a Durbanite looking for an indoor activity for the family, the Durban Natural Science Museum in the heart of the city might be a good choice for you.
I know what some of you are thinking, “A stuffy museum… No thank you!”
I get it, a museum doesn’t sound fun but our recent trip was actually quite nice. Allow me the opportunity to sway you.
Firstly, a trip to the museum is inexpensive since there’s no entrance fee. You just need to haul the family there. An uber is a great option as parking is limited. If you really have to use the car then you can park at the Avis parkade behind the Royal Hotel or Pine Parkade which is a little further away.
The displays are well kept and offer great photo opportunities. If you’re a nature lover and frequent nature reserves often, you’ll be surprised at the animals on display that you’ve probably never seen or heard of before from our region. It’s like an indoor safari without the humidity and mosquitoes.
The natural science museum is small so it will only take up 1.5 hours of your day, if not less so it fits in nicely with any sightseeing trip.
There isn’t a cafe or store to buy something to eat so you might want to consider going to Ushaka or Suncoast Casino thereafter to have a bite.
If you’re an art lover or just curious, you can visit the art gallery which is directly above the museum. I’m not an art lover so I can’t give it a fair review. It seems small to me with limited pieces on display.
I hope you found this review useful and look forward to your feedback.
